Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in skincare but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Melissa Richards, owner of Elia Facecare, located in Chicago, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Elia Facecare. It's a skincare company whose products are only made of natural ingredients and botanical actives. My customers are called the Healthy Skin Club, and they are whoever wants to join the journey of healthy skin! Everyone is eligible.

Tell us about yourself

The idea for my business came from my own personal skincare journey. I had tried so many different products, and nothing seemed to help me, so I started researching. I knew there had to be people like me, and I wanted to help them too. My motivation is having a business in general and being confident in my conversations with customers and potential customers.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment was getting my aesthetics fundamental certificate. It's basically the core foundational sciences of the skincare portion of an esthetician program without moving into clinical and services. I love talking about skincare because I know what I'm talking about.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The inconsistency of being an entrepreneur. The posts that say things like you could make $50 one day and $500 in another are so true. It's trying but so rewarding to continue growing my business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

My top 3 tips for someone looking to start, run, and grow a business would be as follows:

  1. Set up your theme. This is what is going to draw people in before they know anything else.
  2. Do your own research. Don't be so quick to enroll in a business starting a program or something similar. Sit down with a notebook and see what Google has to offer first.
  3. Don't sell anything you wouldn't purchase. Your passion is different when you truly love and utilize your own brand. There's no better face for your brand than you, the creator.
