Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Justine Bernard, owner of Elements Center, located in Washington, DC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a center that returns joy to movement with very experienced Physical Therapy, Gyrotonic® trainers, Pilates trainers, massage, and acupuncture. Elements become your movement home with a welcoming and kind clients and teachers of all backgrounds.

Tell us about yourself

I was a professional dancer in NYC when I injured my back; I tried many modalities until I found the Gyrotonic® movement system. I continued to dance and then went to get my doctorate in physical therapy to better understand the amazing benefits of the Gyrotonic® system. I get so sad when I hear people say, "I hate exercising." How sad to lose the joy of play and movement. Elements exist to return that joy for anyone of any shape, size, movement background, etc.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We have been in business for 15 years, even surviving a pandemic! We expanded and are now one of only three certifying studios in the United States. However, one of my biggest accomplishments is to help racially diversify Gyrotonic studios across the country. We are slowly and steadily making this happen.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Wearing all the hats (marketing, accounting, managing, etc.), being there for staff, teachers, clients, and patients while making sure everything is running as smoothly as possible.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start small and grow organically.
  2. Know what you are good at and what you need to outsource to someone else.
  3. Never lose sight of your original mission. It may change over time but remember why you started.
