Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rebecca Smith, Owner of Elder Moon Soap Company, located in Andover, KS, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are an artisan natural soap and bath product company. Our customers range from anyone that wants a high-quality bath product that actually nourishes your skin and hair to people who understand the importance of reducing plastics with our highly popular shampoo bars and earth-friendly packaging.

Tell us about yourself

As a teenager, I started making my own bath products. I didn't like the thought of using basically detergents to wash my body and hair. I experimented with essential oils and other natural bases. That was over 40 years ago, and now I have an outstanding shampoo bar, bath soap, facial soap as well as other products for the face and body.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Providing a top-quality product that helps reduce plastics in landfills.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The extremely long hours needed to meet deadlines and the level of perfection we strive for daily.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't get discouraged. You can't please everyone all the time.
  2. Give your customers the same level of service, quality product, and enthusiasm you'd want.
  3. Budget your money and find some "me" time weekly.
