Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Victoria Ang-Nolasco, M.D., Founder of Effective Parenting Academy, located in Bacolod, Philippines.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Effective Parenting Academy is a group of sites that supports parents of babies, toddlers, and young kids. We help them parent with calm, joy, and confidence using science-backed and practical positive parenting strategies.

Tell us about yourself

I'm a developmental and behavioral pediatrician and university faculty in pediatrics, child development and behavior, and brain psychology. When I became a parent, I realized that many myths and unrealistic parenting expectations make many moms stressed and guilty. I support parents using the science of child development + brain science, + positive parenting. Hence, we remove these unrealistic expectations and zero in on what science has shown to work, and parent with calm, joy, and confidence.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

It's pretty fulfilling to receive feedback from other moms who've found our site, books, and courses helpful. They talk about how parenting has become more accessible and less stressful for them after taking our classes.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Communicating to others about how we can support them, especially since what we're saying can be different from what many in the parenting niche are saying.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

First, if you have a dream, go for it. I've wanted to share my message online and in a book for over a decade, but I was afraid of things like being bashed for what I say. While there were times I was criticized for my message (since it's pretty different from what many say!), it was nowhere nearly as scary as I thought.

Second, seek support from others. I've had excellent support from coaches and others who share the same mission as I do.

Third, always be authentic to who you are and your values. In the online world, so many people say you have to say so and so or do so and so to grow your business. I'm thankful to have stayed true to what I believe is right.
