Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Emma Morales Neyra, founder of Edible Piñatas Inc., located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a specialty online piñata smash cake shop that provides the perfect gift for all occasions. We make gifting incredibly easy with quick online ordering and delivery straight to your doorstep. We operate out of a health-inspected commercial kitchen and only use high-quality ingredients.

Tell us about yourself

I started Edible Piñatas after being furloughed from both my jobs due to COVID-19 shutdowns in Ontario, Canada. The idea for Edible Piñatas arose while looking for the perfect gift to make my boyfriend's lockdown birthday/ college graduation a little more special. I decided on a smash cake filled with all of his favourite things, and since then, the demand has been incredible. My favourite part about this business is reading the sweet messages people leave on their orders for their friends and loved ones. Seeing how we help individuals and companies spread love and joy every day is what keeps me motivated.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think my biggest accomplishment has been the amount of growth Edible Piñatas has achieved in our first year under my leadership as a solo-entrepreneur. Within one year, we managed to generate over 1000 website sales and land dozens of well-established corporate clients that I personally know and love.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing that comes with being a business owner is definitely juggling all aspects of the business while still making time for yourself. When business ramps up, it is so tricky to find time to work ON the business while you are busy working IN the business - especially as a solo entrepreneur.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know what matters, and don't spend too much time fussing over things that can be changed later.
  2. Know your customer and work towards making their experience with your business as seamless as possible.
  3. Surround yourself with people that inspire you, and don't be afraid to seek help when needed. Every business owner needs a mentor.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

E-commerce and moving our business online is when we saw massive growth for our business. Although e-commerce is very prevalent in many other industries, I find that it is lacking in food. I encourage every food business owner to explore different avenues of online ordering and work towards developing an online ordering system that works for them.
