Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tammy Foxx, owner of Eden Fitness Studio, located in San Francisco, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

After working for many years in gyms that were male-focused (and the challenges that can present), it became my strong desire to open a female-focused personal training studio. In 2019, that dream finally became a reality when I opened Eden Fitness studio.

My husband and I designed Eden to be a clean, safe and beautiful environment for female personal trainers and their private clients. In addition to state-of-the-art fitness equipment, we have given attention to every little detail, including sights, sounds, and smells. I love to share Eden with others. Tell us about yourself

I started working on this particular business because I saw a need and wanted to fill it. As mentioned above, female personal trainers and their clients needed a clean and safe environment. I knew I could provide that environment with Eden. My love for my family, what I do, and my community motivate me each day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Successfully weathering the storm of the recent pandemic, The Great Recession of 2007-2009, and various other challenges have been great accomplishments. However, the accomplishment I'm most proud of is how I've been able to utilize my business to empower women. I empower the personal trainers who use my studio by helping them build successful businesses by providing mentoring and generating leads. The trainers, in turn, empower their clients who train at Eden by providing a safe environment for them to build strong and healthy bodies.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

It doesn't matter how well one plans. One cannot plan for the unknown. A perfect example of the "unknown" is the two-year COVID Pandemic and subsequent shutdown.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Many people want to be entrepreneurs. However, it's not for the faint of heart. Make sure you have the passion, stomach, and drive for it. If you discover you do, then go for it! Come up with a solid business plan and execute it.
  2. My next piece of advice is to find a niche. I have run several successful businesses in my life. One of the reasons for my success is that I always found a niche.
  3. My last piece of advice is to make sure you have enough funding before you get started. Trying to start a new business strapped for cash is a recipe for disaster.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Find your passion. Work hard. Believe in yourself. Ignore the naysayers. Have fun!
