Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in agriculture but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Waldo Moraga, president, and CEO of ECO2MIX, Inc., located in Fresno, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We adjust water pH for agricultural irrigation, replacing the use of dangerous and toxic sulfuric acid or sulfur burners with a clean, safe, and sustainable injection of carbonic acid. Our customers are farmers that are willing to change how they do things in farming, less chemicals, and always searching for a better relationship with the environment.

Tell us about yourself

I'm from Chile and moved for good to California in 2018. I have been working with farmers for more than 40 years, always helping them grow food in the most effective and sustainable way. I love waking up every day and knowing that I'm helping farmers deal with their water issues; I really love my job.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I believe that coming from a different country and being able to build a successful new company from scratch is one of my best accomplishments. I have to thank my customers for believing in me.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

It's hard to build a good working team, but most important is to keep them involved with the company mission and the same spirit of commitment that you have with the business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be sure that you are fully in love with your project.
  2. Ask for help on topics that you are not an expert on, there's a lot of very good advice near you, and most of the time, it is very good and free.
  3. Wake up every morning with a task list that you're sure you can accomplish that day, and follow your dream.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Do very good market research, find your customers, and find a real problem to solve before you start any new endeavor; without a solution to a real problem, you don't have a long-term business.
