Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in sports athletics, but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dominic Latella, owner and head instructor of SwimBox. Dominic is a multi-certified swimming coach from Northern VA, USA.

Tell us all about your business...

There are 11 million adults in the USA who don't know how to swim. SwimBox is a swim school dedicated to drowning-proofing the communities. We are helping anyone who wants to learn to swim or improve their swimming at any level.

What's your background and motivation to get into the solopreneur life?

Being a swim coach for a career isn't something most people can do because it isn't very lucrative. And many times when I tell someone that I'm a swimming coach, they can't even understand that people are willing to pay me money to teach them how to swim or improve their swimming. I created SwimBox to not just help people learn to swim but also to help swimming instructors, and coaches make a living sharing their love for the sport of swimming.

As a business owner, what does success ultimately mean to you?

Growing from a 300 square foot room to having 3 locations and 15 employees.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Giving space to employees that I trained to make mistakes.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run or grow a business today?

Don't be something you are not. If it's just you in 300 square feet, be proud of that. You do not need to make yourself look bigger than you are.

What are some of the things you put in place to maintain a healthy work/life balance and to keep it all together?

High wages and 25 to 30 hours of work per week.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

No one does anything by themselves. Appreciate the people that help you to get where you are going.
