Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tara Kukla, Owner of East Valley Therapeutic Massage, located in Mesa, AZ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Hi! My name is Tara Kukla, licensed massage therapist and owner of East Valley Therapeutic Massage in Mesa, AZ. I specialize in back and hip pain. Most of my clients are other business owners, hairstylists, nurses, retail, parents, and some computed workers.

Tell us about yourself

I opened my practice during the pandemic of October 2020. I was not planning on opening my own practice until my boss at the time explained they may shut down the company I was working for at the time. Thus, I quickly found my own office, opened up shop, and am super happy that I did! What motivates me is I am happy with what I do as a healer. I love my clients and feel this profession allows me to be creative and help others.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I want to say the drive and the determination. I always hear from my clients, "I've never had a massage therapist do that for me," or "I've never met a massage therapist who is as thorough and knowledgeable as you." I am constantly educating myself and uplifting my business in many different ways, from massage techniques to communication and more.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Accountability and taking action.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. If you own a massage business, hire a business coach! I highly suggest Rebecca de Azevedo with Rock Your Massage Practice.
  2. Learn accountability. If you are not happy with where you are at in business, you need to take action.
  3. Take time for yourself too. Your business is not a charity (unless it is), but you should be making a profit. Read the book Profit First.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Have fun with your business! Be professional, of course, but know that it can take time. Have fun while continuing to build your thriving practice.
