Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Emily Wilson, Founder of Earthen Fern, located in Lantz, NS, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Earthen Fern offers nature-inspired wares ranging from art prints, handmade jewelry, accessories, and entomology decor. My customers are those that appreciate life’s small wonders and take inspiration from the natural beauty that surrounds us.

Tell us about yourself

I started Earthen Fern after leaving a strenuous job for mental health reasons. I wanted to be more in control of my life and explore my creative side. Earthen Fern is only 1.5 years old, and I finally feel like I have hit the right groove with what I offer to the world. Each day I’m motivated by the feeling I get creating my own path, controlling my own happiness, and building the life I’ve always wanted to live.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has definitely been my own personal growth. Before Earthen Fern, I felt so lost in life, and my mental health was at the worst it had ever been.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

That being said, it’s not like having my own business hasn’t been difficult. I think the hardest thing that comes with it is the Imposter Syndrome and doubting yourself. “Am I doing the right thing? Is this worth it? This person is doing it so much better and more successfully!” Comparison is the thief of joy. It’s so easy to get burnt out and want to give it all up, and you have to work through those feelings.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

My top three tips for anyone would be:

  1. Make connections! You can learn so much just by connecting with those in your industry.
  2. Community over competition: This coincides with point 1. The small business community in my area is so helpful, friendly, and welcoming. There is room for everyone, and we all benefit from each other’s successes at market events, social media growth, and more.
  3. You don’t need to know everything; you can start small. Manage your expectations for growth and learn as you go!
