Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in accessories but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kitty Runions, Owner of Earth Beads, located in North Gower, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Earth Beads are feel-good beads! These unique gemstone beaded bracelets are designed for women and men, made from quality sourced natural stones and wood beads. Choose from stretch mala bracelets, or try making a little wish with a tie-on wish bracelet! The idea behind my wish bracelets is the power of positive thinking! As you tie the bracelet on, make a wish. It is said that if you can imagine something and visualize it, then you have the power to make it happen!

Tell us about yourself

I started my business making diffuser bracelets. I was trying to think of a way to combine my love of natural healing and using essential oils, along with my great passion for making jewellery. Although the bracelets were initially designed as aromatherapy jewellery, I find my customers enjoy wearing them both with and without essential oils.

More recently, my wish bracelets have become very popular, and I love to get messages from my customers as to how my bracelets have helped them in some way. Making others feel good is a huge motivation for me!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Turning my interest in making bracelets into more than a side hustle has been my biggest accomplishment as a business owner! I love that I'm able to help support my family with the income I am earning from having my own business!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I think the most difficult part of being a business owner is learning all of the accounting and business side of things. I love to make jewellery, but I had no idea how to run a business. There was a big learning curve once I changed from being a "maker" to a "business owner!"

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be passionate about your business, and take pride in what you make/do.
  2. Network with others, educate yourself as much as possible about how to run a business, and outsource when needed (i.e., accounting help!)
  3. Be prepared to roll up your sleeves and put in long hours. It is completely worth it in the end!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Don't forget to take a little time for yourself along the way; after all, life is about balance!
