Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Laura Metzdorff-Rivera, Owner of Earth and Air Wellness, located in Pleasant Hill, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Earth and Air Wellness is a multi-practitioner acupuncture clinic in the East bay area of San Francisco. Our patients are those seeking alternative healthcare for whole-body wellness.

Tell us about yourself

I always knew I wanted to work with people. I began my journey in the field of Chinese medicine as a way to give others the opportunity to view their wellness in a new way, different from how we've been taught in the West. Showing up each day to work one-on-one with patients who are interested and invested in their wellness is what I love most about working in this field.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My greatest achievement was growing the clinic to the point where I was able to retire as a practitioner and solely assume the post of CEO, in addition to creating and running a profitable business for more than ten years and through a pandemic. I've been able to do this because it has allowed me to be closer to my family, spend more time pursuing my passions and reach others outside the clinic's clientele.

Making Earth and Air Wellness a dual-coast business, I have been developing online mindfulness seminars and am just getting started with the opening of a second clinic in the New York City region.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, the most challenging thing about being a business owner is maintaining the confidence that I'm making the right decisions. When you work for a company, you have those above you giving you tasks, affirming your work, and offering constructive criticism. When you own a business, you're the one in charge, and you have to learn to play those roles for yourself.

I also have to remember to celebrate my accomplishments. It's easy to always think I haven't achieved enough.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be confident that you have the tools to begin your journey today.
  2. Align yourself with people who believe in you and your work.
  3. Learn to be flexible, every day won't be perfect, but when you allow yourself to bend without breaking, every day is an opportunity to contribute to your success!
