Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in jewelry and accessories but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Abby Dubois, Founder and Creative Director of EACH Jewels, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

EACH Jewels is a hair accessory and jewelry brand that is ethically and sustainably produced here in the US and Italy. At EACH, we believe small items can make a big impact. Our customers are typically socially conscious consumers who love fashion and want items that are timeless but styled in an on-trend way.

Tell us about yourself

I am a design and accessories veteran. I worked corporate as a jewelry and accessory designer for almost a decade prior to starting EACH. After working corporate, I noticed a huge hole in the market for hair accessories that are great for every day and neither budget nor bridal. Additionally, there are not a lot of accessories that are domestically produced that are fun, wearable, and feminine. Our customers and manufacturers keep me motivated. We are constantly thinking of new ways to surprise and delight our community, and we take immense pride in supporting multi-generational manufacturing businesses. It’s really a win-win for all.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

It’s a tie between getting into Nordstrom and getting into the FabFitFun box. I used to work at Nordstrom when I was in high school, so it was such a full-circle moment that reminded me why I do what I do. Also, launching in FabFitFun was amazing. They are such incredible partners, and their reach is huge. Seeing our daisy clips regularly in the wild was and continues to be so rewarding.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Being a business owner is not for the faint of heart; truly, only the strong survive. Every day my resilience is tested, but I continue to surprise myself whenever I rise to the occasion and overcome another obstacle. I truly never knew what I was capable of until I started EACH.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a clear sense of why you’re doing what you do, and make sure that opportunity to execute your why doesn’t exist outside of your business. Then you know you could be onto something, assuming there is a good product market fit.
  2. Surround yourself with the right people, whether it’s vendors, friends who are also founders to lift you up when things get tough, and lastly, people who believe in your business. Also, it’s a double win when the people who believe in your business are your customers.
  3. Roadmap and playbook EVERYTHING. Then you will rarely find yourself flailing when things get tough. Even the most stable business can be incredibly unpredictable, but having a mapped out plan b and c is never something you will regret.
