Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in financial services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ekua Anyanful, Founder and CEO of EA Wealth Management, located in Fort Worth, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I guide clients in creating wealth and provide investment management strategies that effectively address their financial goals and help them reach financial independence. I love my ability to help people and businesses address their retirement planning needs, provide insurance to mitigate risks, and provide suitable investment options. My clients are women in general and women small business owners.

Tell us about yourself

I went through a divorce in 2002, and I found myself trying to figure out my finances which were then 100% managed by my ex-husband. Many people, especially women, have similar stories to mine when they go through a life event (divorce, death of a partner, health crisis) and suddenly fall apart financially. My goal is to educate, empower and prepare financial plans for both individuals and women small business owners to prevent financial ruin in a crisis. Knowing that I am a valuable resource that can change the course of a person's financial future is my daily motivation.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I am in an industry heavily dependent on the stock market and the economy. I went independent to start my own private practice in December of 2007. In 2008, there was a recession, and I was in full crisis mode. Making it through the recession of 2008 and now the current market turbulence is my greatest accomplishment. Survival and thriving in a down market, inflationary economy, and managing client emotions is a true testament to my resilience and the strength of my business.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a minority business owner, you are already placed in a category where you need to strive for excellence above and beyond your fellow counterparts in order to compete for resources that are earmarked for growth and sustainability for all businesses. Unfortunately, finding financial resources (loans, lines of credit, the right business credit cards) to expand and grow can be challenging, and it is important to align yourself with a team of professionals that know more than you and have the connections to help you on your journey of expansion and success.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a written business plan.
  2. Review and manage your cash flow and profit and loss statements monthly.
  3. Be consistent and reliable.
