Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with McKimley Hudson, Founder of Dyslexia Specialist Group, LLC, located in Byram, Mississippi, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Dyslexia Specialist Group, LLC provides Dyslexia Therapy and foundational reading skills to struggling readers and people five years to adulthood who are diagnosed with dyslexia.

Tell us about yourself

I am McKimley Owens Hudson, founder and operator of Dyslexia Specialist Group, LLC. I first began working in Dyslexia Therapy in 2017, after struggling to understand the dyslexia diagnosis my then six year old son had just received. Once the private school I worked for and my children attended closed abruptly in May 2021, I took a faith walk by moving into a building and extending dyslexia services to my local community and surrounding areas. Each day I'm motivated to continue helping families conquer the frustrations plagued by academic difficulties in reading, writing, and spelling. My two children are dyslexic, so each day's journey to create a positive learning environment is close to my heart.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is providing the hope that so many families are looking hard to find. I've spoken at a few prestigious events and continue to grow my clientele each year successfully. My biggest reward is helping the inferior feel superior once they conquer reading fluently

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is not being able to help everyone who reaches out. I received advice from a well-respected colleague who's worked in this field much longer than I have. Her advice, in essence, was that although my heart will desire always to do more, I must find the exit when it's time to leave each day, knowing that I've done my daily fair share.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Fear will keep you from starting; Override it!
  2. If you nurture your passion, work can be a paid hobby.
  3. Leave when it's time to leave each day.
