Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in training and education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Helen Panos, Founder and CEO, of Dynamis Learning Academy, located in Atlanta, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Dynamis Learning Academy is an-person and virtual K-12 tutoring business. The owner is an educator of 25+ years in a public school system in the metro Atlanta area. She listens to what a parent needs and matches the child to the right type of tutor. That tutor comes to your home, a library, or another mutually convenient location. Additionally, we offer SSAT/PSAT and SAT/ACT Prep. Our customers are those kids who are struggling with their homework and those trying to advance and get into a gifted program in public school. We also teach teens strategies so they are successfully taking the SAT and ACT. Finally, we offer small group online writing workshops and help the homeschool community with the various academic needs of their kids.

Tell us about yourself

I began my teaching career in 1995 in a large metro Atlanta school system. By my 4th year, I began the process of getting a gifted certification which allowed me to teach 6th-8th grade, gifted students. I wanted to help children apply their creative and critical thinking skills in an efficient and productive manner. This position allowed me to work with gifted students and also learn how to review and assess children for the gifted program.

As I taught regular and gifted education within my school for many years, I continued to notice a weakness in basic skills such as reading, writing/grammar, and math. My most recent leadership position as a Section 504 chair brought that more to light.

I am passionate about helping parents navigate their school system and obtain the resources available to help their children that are struggling. Likewise, I am able to assist children who are motivated and intelligent to qualify for gifted testing. This motivates me and has me working countless hours to make sure children are where they can reach their potential.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My greatest accomplishment is hearing my Dynamis Learning Academy students reach their greatest potential.  With assistance from someone they are accountable to (a tutor), children can rise to the occasion and produce great work and learn many skills/strategies.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Getting yourself known in a very large world and hiring people that have the same passion as you. I would also say learning various technology programs as needed to run the business over time.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Treat your employees and customers with honesty and respect - build relationships.
  2. Set quarterly and annual goals.
  3. Follow the numbers by keeping track of your ROI daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly.
