Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in music but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dyce Kimura, Musician & Founder of Dyce Kimura Music, LLC, located in Hollywood, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I teach guitar and voice, and Ableton and my customers are students of these topics. I have an interesting and unique approach to teaching that will help your guitar playing and singing reach their potential.

Tell us about yourself

I started music by playing guitar when I was 6. That evolved slowly into a full-time career at 22 years old. Now I'm 43 and very established in my field. I got lucky at first when I wanted to work in my field as a musician because a prominent music school was willing to hire me to get me to start. Within a year they went out of business and that allowed me to legally keep all my clients and go full-time while owning my own business. I'm motivated each day by my passion to help others and my love for music.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment was definitely learning how to run my make hard decisions involving customers that would put me in the best position in the long run. I always used to struggle with people who would cancel last minute and want to keep the class credit. Also, I would struggle with offering free first-time classes and people not showing up. I've learned not to give free classes for promotion, and for cancelations, I learned to have a written agreement signed and agreed to ahead of time.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest for me was learning how to market and customer retention.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find what you love and do what you love.
  2. Become an expert in your field.
  3. Find someone successful to study under or work for a company to study under until you get the necessary skills.
