Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Andrea Durham, Owner of Durham Research Collaborative, located in Arlington, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Durham Research Collaborative is a consulting firm specializing in clinical research and public health. Our customers are physicians, professionals, and students who want to explore clinical research careers. Our customers are government agencies, contract research organizations (CROs), and pharmaceutical companies (sponsors) that want to expand the reach of clinical trials and public health endeavors.

Tell us about yourself

I've been in clinical research for almost 15 years. I started at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN. Through the years, I've noticed a lack of diversity at the sponsor, investigator, and patient levels. In my job, I must be observant and see patterns. I want the industry to be more inclusive so more communities can benefit from improved patient outcomes and career opportunities.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being a full-time entrepreneur and being able to pay myself and all my bills. Being named one of the Dallas Business Journal's 2022 40 Under 40 out of 300 applicants.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Getting out of my own way. I am my own worst enemy. I overthink things a lot which leads to procrastination and perfectionism. Perfection does not exist. I try to muster all my courage, confidence, and grit to overcome such barriers.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take care of yourself spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically. It's a marathon and not a sprint. So you need to keep your most valuable asset, you, well-tuned.
  2. Surround yourself with good people that mean you well. Know that not everyone can make the journey with you.
  3. Do your research so you can do things properly and legally. Don't try to cut corners. It will only cost you fines, fees, reputation, and customers.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Entrepreneurship is a mindset.
