Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dave Davlin, Owner of DTD Communications, located in San Marcos, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a professional speaker for corporate events and conferences. Being a keynote speaker, I typically open or close out corporate meetings with a dynamic keynote presentation.

Tell us about yourself

I originally began as an entertainer for the National Basketball Association. You could describe me as a "one-man Harlem Globetrotter" as I developed the ability to do incredible things with a basketball, including trick dribbling, juggling, and spinning. In 1990, I set the Guinness World Record for spinning 12 basketballs on my body at the same time. I started speaking in public schools across America, and now my career has progressed to corporate audiences. My motto is "success is making life better for someone else." Knowing I have the ability and opportunity to do that motivates me each day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Taking the message I shared with students and parents for almost 30 years and adapting it to be relevant to corporate audiences and businesses.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the most difficult things about what I do is sales. It is a grind but necessary to get me on the stage. When I am on the stage, I'm a speaker. When I'm in my office, I'm a salesperson.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Be willing to set goals, even daily. It tells your mind what to pay attention to and helps you eliminate clutter. Also, operate by the principle of "sowing and reaping." Your success or failure will be the culmination of the small steps you take and the habits you form. Success operates like compound interest.
