Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Douglas Brackmann, Founder of Driven Coaching, located in Nashville, TN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

With two PhDs in Psychology, I have spent my entire career working one-on-one with top performers to help them overcome their limiting beliefs, stop their cycle of shame, and achieve the ultimate personal and professional success. I focus on 'Driven' individuals, usually entrepreneurs, professional athletes, and Navy SEAL types, who tend to have great outward success, and a tendency to self-sabotage.

Tell us about yourself

While I have achieved a lot throughout the course of my career, my journey there wasn't the easiest. A high school dropout at the age of 17, I found myself homeless and living on the streets soon thereafter. My "ah-ha" moment came at the age of 18 after being jolted awake by the words "You can't sleep here!" as an older woman knocked on the back of the van I was living in at the time. I suddenly saw my "self" through her eyes and knew I wasn't the person she saw.

After this awakening moment, I decided to do something different with my life. That decision led to some inner questioning and then to my wondering, "What's wrong with me?" But nothing was wrong with me. My Driven genetics was simply a mismatch with our conventional world. Sometime after making this decision, I went into recovery for my addictions and went back to graduate from high school, then worked tirelessly to earn my Bachelor's Degree from USC and 2 dual PhDs from UCSD so I could help others facing the same issues that plagued me for much of my life.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Helping other Driven people feel belonging. I am often told my book is an uncomfortable biography for those who read it. There is nothing more rewarding than helping someone heal their shame and truly know there is nothing wrong with them.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

There are a lot of opportunities, a lot of things you could do. Truly there are no rules when you own your own business, which can make it hard to decide where to focus time and energy on growing your business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find your passion that is in service of others.
  2. Find someone to bring your vision to life.
  3. When it gets going, get out of your own way.
