Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Madison Homewood, founder of Drinks On Friday, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Drinks On Friday is a luxury cocktail company. We deliver pre-mixed, no-hassle cocktails straight to your door. Our customers are people looking for a delicious at-home cocktail experience but don't want the mess or who would rather spend more time drinking cocktails than making them!

Tell us about yourself

During the pandemic, my province was shut down for over 18 months. As someone who's been in the hospitality industry my whole life, I was really missing connecting with people and feeling hospitable. To me, this business is my extension of hospitality. It's a way to connect with people even when we can't be in the same room. The idea of people gathering with their loved ones or friends in the comfort of their own homes drinking drinks that I made really brings me so much joy.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Honestly, simply becoming a business owner is a huge accomplishment for me. I've always wanted to create something and work for myself, but it took a long time for me to build the confidence and believe in myself that people would actually want to buy my product.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

There are so many things to learn, and it can feel discouraging sometimes. Every day there is a new challenge, and we often try to take it all on ourselves. Learning when to ask for help and how to accept help was really difficult for me at the beginning.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The top tips I would give someone looking to start a business would be
Just start; if you wait until your product or service is 'perfect,' you started too late. Planning is important, but action is more important. Don't get stuck in the planning stage for too long. At some point, you just have to put both feet in and start to learn as you go. Even if you fail, you'll learn something valuable. Lastly, don't shy away from people who are doing things similar to you. It's important to learn, grow, and get inspired by one another. As they say, 'a rising tide lifts ALL boats' don't be afraid of competition.
