Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Vanessa Lee, ND, a Naturopathic Doctor, based in Port Coquitlam, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a naturopathic doctor, and I see patients from all walks of life. People come to me with a variety of health concerns, but some of the key focuses are mental wellness (e.g., stress & anxiety management), digestive health, women's health, and finding balance in everyday life.

Plans for patients can be created from a blend of naturopathic testing, dietary support, lifestyle changes, acupuncture, Reiki, energy healing, naturopathic counseling, and supplements (i.e., vitamins, herbs, nutraceuticals).

Tell us about yourself

I grew up seeing my father work "miracles" with patients through acupuncture, Qi-gong, and some basic principles of natural healing. I started my journey in naturopathic medicine because I could see there was more to healing than the typical symptom-management approach of conventional medicine.

Every day, I am excited to work with patients because every story is unique. I love the challenge of discovering how each person can start on their own path to reaching a higher state of health. We talk. I listen. We create a plan that works for their specific concerns and lifestyle. When it clicks, it's a beautiful thing!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment in my work is in sharing my knowledge - educating people so that they can take positive steps within and continue to spread the health to loved ones in their lives.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Though business ownership has its ups and downs from a volume and flow standpoint, this is also a lesson. Life and health will always also flow like waves, up and down, and it's our resilience and non-resistance to these fluctuations that allow us to carry on in a balanced way.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Choose a business that brings you joy.
  2. Ensure that you are creating a positive impact on the world and others.
  3. Remember that life, and business, are about both inner and outer balance.
