Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in training and education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Tiffany McKinnon-Russell, Founder of Thoughts of a Homeschool Mom, located in Richmond, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help new homeschool moms create learning environments that align with the way their child learns, how their family flows, and their personal preferences, so homeschooling can fit into the life, they are already living. I work with a variety of homeschool families, but my area of expertise involves families with creative children who are kinesthetic learners.

Tell us about yourself

I am a former member of Corporate America turned homeschooling mom, entrepreneur, and author. My journey with homeschooling began when my daughter (who was four years old at the time) specifically asked me to be her teacher full-time. She preferred the time she spent learning with me during the week over the time she spent at her preschool program. We decided to give homeschooling a try and never looked back. As our homeschool journey continued, I realized I was able to design a learning environment that engaged my daughter and also allowed her to identify and pursue her interests and passions. As a result, my daughter began her professional acting career at the age of seven, made her Broadway debut in Disney's The Lion King (Young Nala) at the age of 9, and is currently performing with Disney's Frozen North American Tour in the role of Young Elsa.

My business began when I decided to share our unique homeschooling journey on social media and through my blog. Several families began reaching out to find out how I was using homeschooling to help my daughter achieve her goals and dreams and how they could do the same with their children. I began consulting, teaching, and sharing resources to assist families with beginning their own homeschool journey. I'm motivated to continue this work every day because of the happiness I witness in my daughter and the families I help. I know my story, experiences, and knowledge are necessary, and I'm excited to empower more families.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is being able to be of service to others while still being available to my family. Having the ability to support and care for my family is paramount, and I'm blessed to be able to do so.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is time management. Most times, you are wearing several hats, and finding time to take care of all the business tasks can be challenging. I use a strategy I call "Top 7's" to keep my day organized and avoid feeling overwhelmed. It involves prioritizing your tasks and limiting major activities to seven items per day.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

My top 3 tips for someone wanting to start a business would be:

  1. Be clear about why you want to be a business owner. Your why is your anchor.
  2. Identify and utilize the proper technology to streamline your business practices from the start.
  3. Success in business takes consistency and determination. Keep your eyes focused on your goals at all times.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

You can be a successful business owner and a great mother! You don't have to sacrifice one for the other. Find the path and strategy that works for you and commit to staying the course.
