Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brandon Segal, CEO of Dr. Segal's, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We make products that make people feel good! Specifically, FASHIONABLE Compression and Diabetic Socks. I remember when we were just getting started, and I was speaking with a new account and telling them that I was from Dr. Segal's and that we made fashionable compression socks. They literally started laughing at me... Until I pulled out the product. They immediately stopped laughing and have been a great customer ever since!

Our customers are really anyone looking to benefit from the health and wellness benefits of compression and diabetic socks. Specifically for compression socks, preventative leg health is a big topic for us. We not only focus on reactive leg health, for instance, once people have varicose or spider veins, but we also focus on preventative leg health. This means that we advocate wearing compression socks early on to prevent problems in the future. I equate this to brushing your teeth. You don't wait until you have a cavity to start brushing your teeth - you do this to prevent cavities and other issues. It's the same with compression therapy.

Tell us about yourself

We started Dr. Segal's in 2012. My father is Dr. Segal, and he has helped thousands of patients with their vein problems over his career. We started Dr. Segal's as a way to help fill a need that his patients were asking for. Knowing that we are making products that help people feel good is something that really drives me.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is taking a concept and making it a real business, all while doing it with my family.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing that comes with being a business owner is managing growth. Because it's so unpredictable, you need to always have your eyes wide open to see opportunities coming up.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be passionate about what you do. This is a journey and a long one at that. Everyone looks for overnight success, but overnight success takes 10-15 years.
  2. You need to truly understand your business. Nobody is going to do that for you.
  3. Build relationships. Relationships are the backbone of growing a business.
