Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sarah Heath, Founder of Dr. Sarah Heath, Chiropractic, located in Woodstock, ON, CA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a human and animal chiropractor. I treat people from all walks of life and their pets for pain, wellness, and performance. From newborns to seniors, from people to horses, dogs, cats, goats, cows, alpacas and so on!

Tell us about yourself

I have always wanted to work in healthcare. I've always been intrigued by anatomy and health sciences. Lucky for me, I was able to combine that with my love for animals. As an equestrian since a young age, I knew I wanted to work with animals. Chiropractic care gives me the opportunity to use my passion for health sciences and help people and their animals. Seeing my patients improve and be their best selves is what keeps me going every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is helping my patients improve their performance and recover from injury. From dogs who came in as a last resort due to complete paralysis in their hind legs that we're able to fully recover and live a long, happy life to a young man with chronic pain from a disc herniation that was able to go back to playing sports pain-free after many years of sitting on the sidelines. When I can help a person or an animal walk out of my office pain-free, no other accomplishment seems to matter.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The ups and down of business can be so disheartening but can truly make you a stronger person. There are weeks when I am so slammed with bookings I feel like I never sleep, but the next week can be the complete opposite. Keeping the faith on those slower weeks and using those down days for planning some marketing, completing your bookkeeping, or self-care can be just as productive for your business as the crazy busy days.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a good support system. Make sure you have people in your corner who believe in you. Building a business from the ground up can be hard. Having positive people backing you up can be enough encouragement to keep you going each day, even when it's hard.
  2. Remember that there is enough business to go around. You will have competition from other businesses, but those competitors can also be supporters. I have so many chiropractors around me, and we can refer to each other when we need to lean on one another. Don't push away the businesses around you but learn how you can support each other.
  3. Invest in your business. Make sure you hire someone to make sure you're doing your bookkeeping correctly, have someone build your website, and take classes and courses to improve yourself. Building a business will cost money, but the return on investment is well worth it.
