Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Ryan Attar, Naturopathic Physician, based in Fairfield, CT, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My name is Dr. Ryan Attar, and I am a naturopathic physician and nutritionist. I practice in Fairfield, CT. I am passionate about health and wellness and help my patients achieve the optimal health they deserve.

Tell us about yourself

It never occurred to me that I would be doing what I am doing and working in this field. I used to be in the Army, and I spent six years in and advanced to the rank of Captain. I unexpectedly came down with T1 diabetes while serving and was medically discharged. After leaving the military, I listened to my doctors and managed my diabetes as they recommended. I found erratic blood sugar swings, which my physicians told me was normal for a person with diabetes.

As I educated myself on diabetes, nutrition, and health, I found better ways to manage my blood sugars and started achieving normal and non-diabetic levels. When my doctors didn't seem impressed, I decided I could do this better myself. And here I am now helping others achieve the optimal health they deserve. Just like my own experience with diabetes, I feel that despite any diagnosis of a chronic ailment, my patients can become healthy and happy.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is building a name for myself as an advocate for diabetes across the country. I was recently featured in the documentary "Diabetes Solution," which is based on the work of the legendary Dr. Richard Bernstein, whose method I follow. I've given talks across the country on diabetes and other health topics, and very happy that I get to share and educate the public on these important topics.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The pandemic has hurt most businesses, and this has been a difficult two years for everyone. My office struggled for a while at the beginning of this, but we persevered and adapted. Following some difficult months, we were ultimately able to grow while we continued to help our patients stay healthy.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find a field you are passionate about, as I did with health and wellness. I love what I do. I love going to work every day, and I love helping people. This is such a huge motivator for me and helps me do great things.
  2. Be honest and upfront with your customers, as I am with my patients. Normally, before a new patient books with me, I offer them a chance to do a free 15-minute phone call before booking. I hear about their health concerns and go over my treatment strategies. After doing this, most of my new patients book, but it is important to me that I am a good fit for them, and they know what to expect from me.
  3. Make sure you make time for yourself. Your own hobbies and your health. For your business to be doing well and growing, you must be happy and healthy. Exercise, good sleep, good diet are essential!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

If you think I could help you get healthy, please feel free to book a free 15-minute phone or zoom consult with me. Let me hear your concerns, and I will go over my strategies for getting you healthier and happier. You can book this directly from my website.
