Mastering the Health Continuum - Dr. Nancy Miggins

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Nancy Miggins DC, ABAAHP, FAAMFM, double board-certified Doctor of Chiropractic, located in Bainbridge Island, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the Functional Medicine expert for high-achievers experiencing the metabolic and hormone chaos of mid-life. My Metabolic & Hormone Reset Program is a weight-optimization and lifestyle program designed to help people with unresolved weight loss, hormone imbalance, and inflammatory issues. No pills, powders, or endless hours on the treadmill are required. It's a mind, body, and spirit approach to balancing hormones and optimizing your metabolism. We emphasize what contributes to weight gain (and what other programs miss), such as sleep, digestion, stress, toxins, and other lifestyle factors.

Tell us about yourself

I am a double board-certified Doctor of Chiropractic. My advanced credentials are in Anti-Aging Medicine and Chronic Pain Management. I am also an advanced fellow, completing the prestigious Fellowship in Anti-Aging, Metabolic and Functional Medicine. In addition, I am the best-selling author of Mastering the Health Continuum: 8 Daily Practices to Boost Energy, Optimize Health, and Age Gracefully. It provides the solution for healing on a cellular level.

As a Functional Medicine Practitioner, I help health seekers take the guesswork out of what diet and lifestyle choices are best for their unique bodies. Together we crack your weight loss code, boost your energy and slay your stress dragon to rehab your metabolism. We have all been conditioned to believe that our health is not our responsibility. Diseases and illnesses are not your faults. It's a bug, or better yet, it's genetic. Conventional wisdom has often left people powerless to combat disease when they are diagnosed since many believe that our genes determine our fate and there is nothing that we can do to change that. People are looking for a silver bullet – that one pill that is going to take away their pain or disease without them having to change anything in their diet or lifestyle.

What they really want is to have something done to them that requires no effort on their part and, more importantly, that will allow them to continue their current lifestyle. Sound familiar? When it comes to health, we try the easiest stuff first – Dr. Google, doctor appointments, tests, MRI, procedures, drugs; if one drug doesn't work…no problem, there are thousands more to try – and if all else fails, there is always surgery. All the things that THEY do – anything that doesn't require activity on our part. Which creates a comforting illusion that we're doing something about our problem by letting somebody else do it. But too often, you just keep getting even sicker, more tired, and more frustrated. Believe me, I know….I was often the last resort for my patients. They had tried all the fads, pills, potions, etc., without success.

Unfortunately, this outside-in approach does not address the root cause of your problem. Sure, you MIGHT get some temporary relief from symptoms, but the true cause of your problem is still there, wreaking havoc behind the scenes. We've arrived at the threshold of a time when good health and a powerful immune system are not only advisable; they are the very determinants of survival. It is more important now than ever to reclaim power over your health. To work with your body rather than against it. You have more control over your health and healing potential than what you have been led to believe.

Look, I get it….fear and self-doubt may be keeping you paralyzed from taking action. The good news is that the odds are in your favor… Diet and lifestyle choices cause and cure about 90% of diseases. We are on a health continuum from conception to death. Health, and disease for that matter, are not stagnant. Health is not a destination but rather a process strongly influenced by the choices you make in regard to diet and lifestyle. Our world is fast-paced, and we have come to expect immediate gratification. That is not how health (or your body) works. Just as it takes years and often decades to build disease, it takes time to rebuild health. There is no magic pill or potion that will cure you. Only you can cure yourself.

There is an abundance of information available at your fingertips – but this information overload leads to frustration, confusion, and overwhelm.
How do you know what is true? And even more importantly, what is best for you and your unique body. I am a firm believer that you should not have to go to medical school to understand your body and be able to make decisions that will optimize your health. Understanding the key elements behind how your body works will help to remove the fear of the unknown and give you more confidence to reclaim control over your health. Knowledge is power.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I feel honored and humbled to witness the success of my program participants, especially when they reach back out to me after a year or more to tell me that they are still maintaining their results.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

You have to wear A LOT of hats - master communicator, marketer, content creator, copywriter, bookkeeper, researcher, mother, doctor, partner, friend, tech wiz, HR director, taskmaster, mentor, etc. Having a successful business is not just about having a great product or service; it hinges greatly on your ability to develop efficient processes and systems to support you, your team, and your business. Building a solid foundation is not the sexy stuff!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

There are so many online tools available that help to streamline and manage the business. These are no replacements for good common sense!

  1. Hire a mentor.
  2. Stay lean and mean so that you can adapt and pivot in the ever-changing marketplace.
  3. Establish a budget and stick to it.
