Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Michael R. Mantell, Ph.D., Global Behavioral Science Authority, Rational Emotive Behavioral Coach, Speaker, Author, and Advisor, based in El Cajon, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I've spent nearly 50 years helping people disturb themselves less and find lasting change, contentment, and a more awakened life as they move past crippling emotions like anxiety, stress, depression, and burnout with short-term, powerful, compassion-based rational-emotive behavioral coaching approaches.

Tell us about yourself

I began focusing on psychology, personal and organizational coaching, as an undergraduate, when in a large lecture hall, my psychology professor called me out and, in a long walk, suggested that I was the only one awake, focused, and connected to his lectures. I awoke to my natural purpose, my given talents, my inner alarm that I woke to every day...helping others grow, succeed and prosper was what I was placed here for.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is clearly authentically and genuinely living my purpose every day - enlightening, strengthening, inspiring, and healing others - whether it be in personal or executive coaching, leadership and organizational development, media appearances, and national/international presentation.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Staying genuinely true to my path, not the path of others, ensures I am riveted to focusing on the singular goals of my clients to help ensure their wellbeing. In a world of well-curated and highly developed false distractions, it is easy for business owners to forget their business and instead aim for the business of others.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Recognize that even those who stop you don't stop you...only your own limiting thoughts do.
  2. Be different. Be very different. When the world is running in one direction, be original and lead in the other direction.
  3. Remain agile and flexible and avoid rigid thinking.
