Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Maiysha Clairborne, Founder of Mind ReMapping Company LLC, located in Atlanta, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the founder of Mind ReMapping Co, an Atlanta-based consulting company that provides custom, physician-led trauma-informed training, coaching, & certifications for individuals and organizations. We specialize our content for leaders in K-12 schools, higher education, and clinical healthcare systems. Informed by neuroscience and grounded within the tenets of emotional intelligence, our work teaches communication that heals, empowers, and transforms for generations.

Tell us about yourself

Coming out of medical school, I always knew my path would be different. The ideas I had for practicing medicine with a holistic style were ahead of their time. In residency, I realized that the traditional way of practice would not work for what I wanted and that as I came close to completing my residency, I looked for jobs that were aligned with what I wanted to do, but there were none. My mother always showed me that if something you want doesn't exist, you have to create it. This is how I've always approached my career. I started my practice in integrative medicine before it was trendy. After ten years, I sold my practice and transitioned to coaching burned-out medical moms. However, when I had my son, things shifted for me. I started to see the work I could do for future generations and the legacy I could leave. As a single mom who also happens to be a language, communication, and emotional intelligence expert, I see the impact that my work has on our relationship and his development. What motivates me is the possibility of every child having mentorship in this way, whether in schools or after-school programs. This is why I've focused part of my consulting work toward educational atmospheres.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think the biggest accomplishment as a business owner is the ability to run a successful business as a single parent and have a relatively balanced life. I make it a point to play with my son daily, to create activities, especially for us, and to have time to take care of myself apart from him. That took some practice and planning, but it has been well worth the awareness and work.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The most challenging thing is keeping a level head even in tough times. The nature of entrepreneurship (especially at the beginning) is that it's a bit of a rollercoaster. Learning to maintain equanimity during the up and down waves is key to being able to take action during those tough times.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. The first and most important thing to do is to get your mind right. Entrepreneurship requires mental flexibility and grit. I'd recommend committing to a personal development journey, whether it's books, trainings, coaching, or all of the above.
  2. Become a part of a community. My entrepreneurship journey started alone. I learned very quickly that I could not only grow as a business but as a person much faster and much more deeply inside a supportive community
  3. Hire coaches (but only one at a time) - business coaches, marketing coaches, sales coaches, and personal coaches have all been a part of what has helped me grow and be successful. I waited too long to find my first coach (because when I was coming up, coaching wasn't as well-known in my industry). I recommend getting a coach as early as possible to help you to flesh through your ideas, create structured goals and action plans, and walk you through the processes. As I said earlier, you are much stronger inside the community.
