Tell us about yourself

I am a psychiatrist, public health doctor, and non-fiction writer. I have had leadership positions at Harvard Hospitals, as mental health commissioner for the City of New York (in the Bloomberg administration), and as chief medical officer of the New York State Office of Mental Health, the largest state mental health agency in the country.

In other words, I care for patients and their families, administrate complex organizations, create needed/radical change in major organizations, and write for the general public on matters of mental health and addictions. I also have done many book, TV, and film reviews. I may be hard to categorize, I suppose.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Not as an owner but as chief medical officer of a 180-year-old Harvard teaching hospital (McLean Hospital) that was saved from closing or purchase. My next book, to be published in the summer of 2023, tells that story.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

It is always personnel. Particularly difficult are good people who do not measure up to the requirements of their position.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Hire the best people you can, give them opportunities to excel, don’t get in their way, and be sure to support /appreciate them.
  2. Take on the hardest job you can, not impossible but very hard, master it, and then find another more difficult job, master it, and so on.
  3. Big problems are solvable: Break down big problems into their components and work through those, one by one, in order to solve the big problems they comprise.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

My wife and I walked the ancient Santiago de Compostela Pilgrimage Trail, 1600 km (1000 miles), from south-central France to the west coast of Spain.
