Change the Way You Change - Dr. Kevin Fleming

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Kevin Fleming, Founder of Grey Matters International, Inc., located in Tulsa, OK, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Grey Matters International, Inc. is a neuroscience-of-behavior-change consulting, advising, and technology firm that does wonders for people who are seeking true transformations via neurotechnology and state-of-the-art brain-changing methodologies. We are a perfect fit for those bamboozled by the lies and half-truths of the self-help, psychiatry, rehab, and 'talk therapy markets" and seek best practice partnerships of neuroscience and compassionate care. Outcomes are facilitated remarkably faster than traditional methods.

Tell us about yourself

I grew frustrated in the clinical psych/therapy world, where I felt success in a counseling session was defined as essentially 'describing the water to the client as they drown and asking them to hang tight in the water, treading for 7 days till I got back to them for the next appointment where I talked at them in the water and described their experience some more." With some of the populations that seek me out (executives, professionals, high-performing minds, and other alternative-minded folks seeking solutions outside the Western medical model), I had to work faster and more effectively, prompting me to seek renegade thinkers, labs, partners, neuroscientists who assisted me in making Grey Matters International, Inc what it is today----a world-class 'think tank' that integrates wildly unique methodologies for neuroplasticity-based changes in some of the most difficult cases/issues: such as addiction, neurodegenerative, mental health, trauma/PTSD, brain injury, habit changes, and various wellness initiatives. I think my creativity as a musician-trained "mind" helps immensely in seeking out divergent thinking and models of change that may sound 'dissonant" to some ears but truly creates breakthrough-type masterpieces for people.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being asked to keynote to various business owners and CEOs in the Middle East at an event that also had in attendance select cabinet members for the King of Jordan.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As an entrepreneur, there is no safety net. Making various revenue streams happen that are 2-3 steps ahead of the normal curve and constantly innovating for people and improving outcomes.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. While following your dream is always easy advice to give, it comes at a cost. Know the trade-offs you are willing to make and not make and start with the ending in the beginning.
  2. When you think you are innovating, think again. Push the boundaries of an idea beyond that place.
  3. Boundary-pushing is great, as noted above, in/with ideation.....but if you have a family, don't do it with people :) Remember the loved ones at home....know that no dollar made is greater than them.
