Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Batista Gremaud, Co-Owner of Dr Fitness International, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Dr Fitness International is where dreams become a reality. We assist humans in upgrading their potential. Our proprietary strength training system is designed to put your body back into balance from the inside out, correcting posture, stabilizing mood behavior, and potentially being pain-free while teaching you never to do anything uncomfortable. In addition, the system rewires your brain by sending blood flow and oxygen to parts of the brain that are inactive, opening up new creative channels and improving memory and mental clarity. Knowing and believing in what you are doing in the gym is necessary to establish sustainable health habits and maximize results. We strongly emphasize synthesizing the mind and body to optimize outcomes by creating a muscle-brain connection, from discipline to motivation. More than reaching your body design and strength training goals, we have a strong history of remedying physical ailments through our strength training method tailored to your body.

You could compare our strength training formulas to the GPS to your ultimate transformation. We guide you through your journey with choreographed sequences of ergonomic movements done with weights so you can get to your destination faster. Our customers consist of men and women of all ages who have the vision to reach higher levels of achievement in their lives and understand that they need to optimize their bodies to reach their full potential.

Tell us about yourself

I was a professional dancer. During my career, I suffered many injuries. For over three decades, I had tried everything I could to get well. So when I met Dr Fitness USA, I was fascinated by his distinctive philosophy, especially his Yin Yang and Carl Jung's approach to strength training, and I hired him to work with me. During the first 20 minutes of the first training session, I was leg pressing over 350 lbs. easily, with no discomfort whatsoever, and regardless of my frozen shoulder, I could chest press 25 lbs. Dumbbells without pain! Within a few weeks, my injuries started to heal, and within a few months, I became pain-free and my weight stabilized. I got my body and life back.

Consequently, I spent the next decade researching the Body Design Formula protocol and learning the system's intricate secret details and inner workings. Through the process, we fell in love, later married, and co-founded Dr Fitness International company.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Stephen is a unique individual. Unlike a personal trainer who works people out, he is more of an intuitive healer who uses strength training as a tool for total transformation. It is truly a holistic approach to transforming your life through bodybuilding. So much of his knowledge was stored in his head. My vision was to make this unique knowledge duplicatable, available to more people, and online. Dr Fitness International has grown from working one-on-one with people in Los Angeles, CA, to establishing a global presence with their online system, working with people worldwide. We have expanded our social media following to over 100,000 followers combined among all platforms, authored 2 number 1 best-selling books, and are featured in several renowned publications such as the Los Angeles Tribune Magazine and the Heart of Hollywood magazine.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The most complex challenge in running the business together as a husband-wife team is work/life balance. It is hard to maintain a personal or family life when you're constantly working on new projects and trying to keep up with customer demands. Therefore, learning to prioritize, set boundaries, and delegate as much as possible is essential.

Fitness is a highly competitive industry; we must constantly find new ways to reach our target market. Many newcomers are skilled at marketing but do not have a successful track record. They have the jargon down. It sounds right, but most of the time, they are lies, leading people towards false hopes and disappointment. It's hard to break through the noise and regain people's trust after they have been disappointed or injured.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Prioritize self-care: many entrepreneurs lose themselves in their business. Remember, you cannot pour from an empty cup. Running your own business requires strength of character, excellent stress management skills, and physical stamina. We walk the talk by going to a brand named gym, which has the proper equipment to work with, even though we have a home gym, three times per week to maintain our physical, mental, and emotional strength by doing strength training as we recommend to others. Also, getting enough sleep, taking time to eat well away from the computer or the cell phone, breathing fresh air, and getting up from your chair if you are desk-bound for many hours.
  2. Set boundaries, learn to delegate, and prioritize: You constantly get pulled in multiple directions, and it is easy to get distracted. Learn to plan and stick to your plan. You can't do everything alone. It's ok to get help. Give yourself scheduled windows of time to answer emails and check social media status. But then turn off social media notifications to avoid distractions. Word of caution… do not take your laptop to bed with you!
  3. Get a mentor and a support system: This goes for your fitness and business coaching. There are pitfalls ahead. Many new business owners are concerned with saving money by doing everything themselves. This is a mistake. Ultimately the mistakes you make in running your business or your fitness practice will cost you time, money, and energy, potentially leading to injuries. We all do better with a mentor, even several mentors.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Being self-employed is not for the lazy nor the faint of heart. It's hard work and takes consistency and persistence. Success does not happen overnight. Instead, it is a culmination of many failures, repeatedly falling and getting back up.

Is having your own business rewarding? Yes, doing what you love to do and serving others with your God-giving talent is the most rewarding thing one can do.
