Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Bruce Chalmer, a couples therapist, author, and podcaster based in South Burlington, VT, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I work with couples in private practice via telehealth, offering Couple Intensives as well as shorter sessions.

Tell us about yourself

I experience this work as a calling, not merely a job, and though I'm not at all fundamentalist in my religious views (quite the contrary—I write about that distinction!), I see it as sacred work. Working with couples can be challenging, but I find it deeply rewarding. And writing books about my work, and podcasting about it together with my wife, are just plain fun.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Making a go of private practice for over 28 years.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Dealing with frequently changing procedures and regulations for getting paid.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The same way I summarize my work with couples:

  1. Be kind.
  2. Don't panic.
  3. Have faith.
