What's your business, and who are your customers?
My name is Dr. Amelia Mazgaloff, a San Francisco chiropractor and founder of Chiro-Health, Inc in San Francisco. After graduating from Life Chiropractic College West in 2001, I established Chiro-Health, Inc in 2004. The chiropractic services we offer in-office are based on spinal and extremity adjustments, posture correction, exercise rehabilitation, and several muscle manipulation techniques aimed at improving patients' mobility, function, and overall physical well-being. My practice takes a multidisciplinary approach where massage, chiropractic, physiotherapy, acupuncture, and exercise rehabilitation are combined together to alleviate and treat the root causes of patients' conditions once and for all. For the past 18 years, Chiro-Health, Inc has been located in the financial district of San Francisco, serving the business community. Most of our patients are professionals who work at a desk and suffer from postural issues due to digital lifestyle overuse injuries related to working long hours on the computer. We also serve a wide array of athletes, from professional athletes to weekend warriors, looking to improve their performance, prevent injuries, and stay at the top of their game.
Tell us about yourself
Once I received my college degree, I started working for a chiropractic office, where I learned the trade and the business. I started in a high-volume practice, where the goal was to see as many patients in as little amount of time as possible. I knew that wasn't my vision of delivering chiropractic care, but it was the fasted way to acquire great adjusting skills. A year later, I quit and established Chiro-Health, Inc. Since my ongoing motivation for maintaining my practice is my love for my work, my patients, and my staff. I feel privileged to have loyal patients who have been with me since I opened the practice, new patients who tell me every day how their lives have changed for the better with our care, and exceptional and experienced staff to lean on for professional support and collaboration.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Most people seek chiropractic treatment when they are in pain and when other modalities have failed. My biggest accomplishment is the ability to turn every patient into a lifelong chiropractic patient who understands and feels the benefits. In turn, I am contributing to elevating the profession. In the past, chiropractors were perceived as "spine-crackers," whereas today, we are a part of a health and wellness medical ally team.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of my biggest challenges has been finding the right balance between fulfilling the roles of a chiropractor-healthcare provider and a business owner. As a doctor, I am most interested in treating patients, meaning working in the business rather than working on the business. Chiro-Health's care providers and I are dedicated to providing the best possible care experience for our patients. This dedication has helped us develop very close and long-lasting relationships with the people we serve. While these bonds with patients are a blessing, the challenge comes when business procedures must be placed first in order to maintain a functioning business model.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
You can't build a business or deliver results alone. Business success is about working with people and about your customers. When starting a business, it is important to have a business mentor instead of counting on family and friends for guidance and support. Invest in finding and retaining a winning team that shares your values, challenge your ideas, and delivers the best possible experience for you and your customers.
