Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Molly Buffham, owner of Donut Junkie, located in Houston, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We bring the fun back to fried food. Mini-donuts, made on the spot, served hot and fresh. Donut Junkie is Dessert Entertainment. The entire process - from mixing the dough to machine-frying each donut to bagging them up and sugaring them - can be an actual thing at your next event!

Tell us about yourself

I made my first mini donut in Venice Beach, CA, when I was 19 years old. It was when we were returning from a military stay in South Korea nearly 15 years later that I had the thought to take the minis mobile. First Washington state, then California, and now Houston, TX. The honest motivation is knowing that when our clients book with us, they'll be getting one of the most memorable experiences with our service. They will be creating some of the most fun and outrageous memories simply by having our hot, fresh minis at their event. Book us, and you will 100% have the stand-out party.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Hearing back from my clients that "everyone still talks about the donuts." It's really about making our clients look like a genius for having the idea to book us. This makes me smile from ear to ear.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Turning it off. I've got two boys, a husband, three dogs, four fish, and six snails, and they all want a piece of me! It could be 9:00 at night, and a text or email comes through, and it's my business nature to want to reply immediately, but I have to stop myself. My family deserves my full attention at the right times.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Join "networking" groups who lift you up and will promote you. YOU. The business is a reflection of you. So be YOU all the way. Get out there. Meet people. Just. Be. You. The groundwork will pay off when others trust YOU.
  2. I'd also be very clear about your brand. Demonstrate what is different about you and be consistent with intangible marketing or business concepts. Your brand is what people say about you after they've experienced what you do.
  3. Finally, get real clear and what you're going to offer your clients. Sell the results they could only get from YOU.
