Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in pet care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sarah Whitman, Founder of Dog Food Coach, located in Guilford, CT, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a nutritionist and dog wellness advocate. My mission is to empower dog caretakers to improve their dogs' well-being through better food. Specifically, I teach people how to make their own healthy dog food easily and quickly. With just a little practice, my clients realize that making homemade dog food is a totally feasible and viable option, and it's worth learning how to do. I am trained in human and pet nutrition, with a master's degree (MS) in nutrition and two certifications in pet nutrition.

Tell us about yourself

I am focused on nutrition and holistic wellness for myself. I have always loved dogs, and my own dogs are of the utmost importance to me. So it is only natural that I care about what goes into their bowls every day. I started cooking for my own dogs in 2008, and soon felt an urge to help others learn how to do it.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

When I hear back from a dog parent who tells me my coaching helped their dog feel better or get better - that is the ultimate reward.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Logistically, I am just one person. I try to do what I can on my own, but I have to realize there is only so much one individual can do. Emotionally, it is difficult for me to see dogs getting sick or staying sick because of what they're eating. I want to help them all!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. When you are by yourself, think quietly and deeply about what you really want to accomplish.
  2. Set priorities and make lists to help you stick to those priorities.
  3. Don't be afraid to think outside the box, get creative, and also take breaks to recharge, so you don't burn out.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I am here to empower dog caretakers - to teach them that they can create truly nourishing diets for their dogs, using simple, everyday items found easily in most grocery stores. Once they learn a few basic tricks, it becomes second nature, and they usually take the ball and run with it. My work is a labor of love, and I treat every client's dog as if he or she were my own furry best friend.
