Tell us about yourself

Hi, I'm Dave Closson, the owner of DJC Solutions, LLC. I run a consulting company that specializes in serving substance misuse prevention professionals, law enforcement officers, and military veterans all across the United States. My mission is to help others achieve their full potential by focusing on sustainable habits, aligned experiences, and next-level excellence.

I'm also an author and one of the few Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) #StillServing Heroes nationwide. My book, "Motivational Interviewing for Campus Police," is widely recognized as an authoritative resource in the field of substance misuse prevention. I'm proud to say that I was the first Director of the Mid-America Prevention Technology Transfer Center, where I worked tirelessly as a prevention catalyst, empowering individuals and fostering partnerships to promote safe, healthy, and drug-free communities.

I bring a unique perspective to substance misuse prevention, having served as a university police officer at Eastern Illinois University and as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. During my deployment in Iraq, I spent a year with my infantry battalion and recon team, earning the Combat Infantryman's Badge and two Army Commendation Medals (one for valor and one for meritorious service).

I have a Master's in Technology, Training, and Development and a Bachelor's in Environmental Biology. I'm a lifelong learner who is committed to pushing my own limits and helping others do the same. Through my training, coaching, and consulting, I'm making a difference in the lives of those I serve and helping them achieve lasting transformation.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Building a business that allows me to do the important work that fills my heart while still being able to be fully present and engaged as a husband and soon-to-be father. #balance

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is the level of responsibility and accountability that rests solely on the owner's shoulders. As a business owner, you are responsible for every aspect of the business, including its success or failure. You have to make difficult decisions, manage finances, handle customer relationships, hire and manage employees, and navigate through challenges. The pressure of keeping the business afloat, meeting expectations, and delivering results can be overwhelming at times. Additionally, the work-life balance can be challenging, as business owners often work long hours, including weekends and holidays, to keep the business running smoothly.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Focus on solving a real problem: The foundation of any successful business is to offer a product or service that solves a real problem. Identify the needs and pain points of your target audience and create a solution that addresses them effectively. This will give your business a strong value proposition and a competitive edge.
  2. Stay agile and adaptable: The business landscape is constantly evolving, and it's essential to stay agile and adaptable to changes. Keep a close eye on market trends, consumer behavior, and emerging technologies. Be open to new ideas and be willing to pivot your business strategy when needed.
  3. Build a strong team: Your team is the backbone of your business, and it's crucial to build a strong and cohesive team that shares your vision and values. Hire people who bring complementary skills and expertise to the table and invest in their training and development. Foster a culture of collaboration, transparency, and accountability, and provide opportunities for growth and advancement. A strong team will help you achieve your business goals and drive growth.
