Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Paul Dixon, owner of Dixon Family Chiropractic, located in Hamilton, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Dixon Family Chiropractic. I've been in practice for almost 26 years now. My patients have two things in common: they have a spine, and they are alive. There isn't a person on the planet that cannot benefit from chiropractic care. Tiny misalignments in the spine (subluxations) will impair the flow of information in the nervous system between the brain and your body. Over time, this will lead to a breakdown in communication and decreased health. This will eventually lead to symptoms. My goal is to help you reach your optimum health naturally.

Tell us about yourself

I visited the chiropractor (Dr. Roger Mayall) for the first time when I was 10. He left an indelible mark on me. Al through high school, being a chiropractor was on my mind. When I entered, I spoke with him about my desire to go to chiropractic college, and he wrote my letter of recommendation. He was an inspiration and mentor to me for many years. Helping people improve their quality of life naturally motivates me every day. I get to watch people's health and lives transform by removing interference in their nervous system. Every patient is the same and different all at the same time. I've been in practice since 1996 and never worked a day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Starting my practice from nothing. I graduated in April 1996, was licensed in September 1996, and opened on November 25th, 1996.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, it is taking time away. Balancing my personal health and well-being while knowing that others might be struggling while I'm away. It was years before I took time off, and I still only take three weeks per year.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be passionate about what you are doing.
  2. Put the time and resources needed to be successful.
  3. Run the business, and don't let it run you.
