Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in franchising, but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Theresa Los franchise consultant -  MyFranchiseLady, USA. Theresa is also affiliated with FranChoice, the premier franchise consulting firm in America, since 2003.

What's your business and who are your customers?

I help people realize their dream of business ownership. I work with individuals who would like to purchase a Franchise business, but are not sure what type of franchise they want, or would be good at running. My customers range from retirees that want to keep busy, to corporate executives that want to invest in a "plan B", to existing business owners that want to diversify their portfolio with a franchise.

Tell us about yourself

I have been in the Franchise industry for over 30 years. I have worked with franchisees to help them improve their business practices, worked in franchise sales, and have owned my own franchise businesses. Now, I can share my experiences with people, coach them through a franchise investigation, and help them find a perfect fit in a franchise of their own. I love helping people realize their dream of business ownership!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have helped hundreds of individuals over the years who were afraid of owning their own business, make that leap from employee to employer. It is very gratifying!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the most difficult things about being a business owner is having the confidence in yourself to achieve your own goals. You have to block out the "noise" of others that tell you that "you can't", and just understand that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. Mistakes will happen, bumps in the road may slow you down or redirect you, but you will get through it, and be a better business owner because of those experiences.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Do your homework, and find a business that will be a great fit for your skillset. Don't over-analyze - the marketplace always changes, and you will have to change with it, so be comfortable riding that rollercoaster. Listen to the advice of others, but don't let them talk you out of your dream.

What are some of the things you put in place to maintain a healthy work/life balance?

When I first started my consulting business, I put together a calendar for the year. Each month, I highlighted a certain number of workdays, a certain number of marketing days, and a certain number of days off. I kept to that monthly schedule, and still use it today.

Who are some of your favorite entrepreneurs and why?

I admire Virgin's Richard Branson, because of his zest for life, and accomplishing his dreams! I always recommend that my candidates read The E Myth by Michael Gerber, and Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Richard Kiyosaki. Super books to help people understand that there are different types of businesses, based on your personal goals.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Life is short. My favorite quote is "If we are ever going to enjoy life, now is the time, not tomorrow or next year...Today should always be our most wonderful day." by Thomas Dreier.
