Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in training and education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Hannah Wilson, Founder of Diverse Educators Ltd., located in Oxford, Oxfordshire, UK.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a DEI training provider for schools and educational organisations. We work with different stakeholder groups, including teachers, leaders, governors, and operational staff.

Tell us about yourself

I co-founded #WomenEd as a senior leader as I became more and more conscious of the glass ceiling for women in education. Other grassroots networks began to launch, and we launched #DiverseEd a few years later to create a cohesive, coherent conversation about representation in schools to ensure that we take an intersectional approach to our DEI strategy.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We published our book Diverse Educators: A Manifesto in 2022; it is a collective voice piece by our network with 13 editors and over 100 contributors. It is structured around the Equality Act and the 9 Protected Characteristics with practical next steps and takeaways for the reader and for schools to take action.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Juggling time, energy, and resource is an ongoing battle, especially when so many opportunities are vision and values-aligned.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be clear on your why and how you are going to communicate it.
  2. Grow your network and ensure it is diverse.
  3. Pace yourself; you need to sustain yourself and others to create impact and legacy.
