Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Emily Chatten, founder of Kinthera, located in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Kinthera helps people access better mental health services by matching them with a therapist through an online, automated platform. We help anyone seeking individual counseling over the age of 16, that resides in Ontario, Canada.

Tell us about yourself

As a Master of Counselling student, I began to realize that the dropout for therapy clients is extremely high. Once someone has started the search for a therapist, there is only a 50% chance they will make it past the second session. Research also tells us that there are a number of solutions to this problem that simply are not being utilized.

Kinthera takes advantage of this research, helping 20% more people follow through with therapy. I am able to stay motivated every day, knowing how important of a problem this is and knowing there is an evidence-based solution waiting to be used.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our biggest accomplishment is launching our fully automated platform this upcoming January 2022. We were able to build out our platform in an informed, efficient manner, producing an effective yet sustainable product.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things as a business owner is knowing everything that happens and can happen is by your hand. I often find it difficult to stop working because I know the longer I take to build Kinthera, the longer my community members have to wait to receive access to better mental health services.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Fail fast - your job is to try new things and realize when they're not working.
  2. Become obsessed with the problem, not the solution.
  3. Reach out to customers and make something they actually want early in the process.
