Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jennifer Eisenstein, Co-Owner of Dinner to Doorbells, located in Newport, KY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a meal prep and delivery company servicing Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. Our customers are busy people looking to eat homemade, healthy food without all the shopping, cooking, and cleanup.

Tell us about yourself

We got started by meal prepping for ourselves. For me, it's because I had gone back to work after having my second baby, and my business partner Ali because she was training as a competitive powerlifter. We realized we couldn't be the only ones who could benefit from what we were doing, and an idea was born!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Covid was an especially hard time for many food businesses, and we are very proud that we were flexible and creative enough to figure out how to tweak what we were doing to not only survive but do well during Covid. We also had the opportunity to work with La Soupe, which is a nonprofit that helps to save food that might otherwise be thrown away by grocery stores and make them into delicious meals for families who need them.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I think it's that you never really get a break. There is always something you could or feel like you should be doing to improve the business. That being said, it feels really worth it when our customers tell us how much they appreciate the work we do.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do something you love to do because you're going to be doing a lot of it!
  2. Surround yourself with amazing people. My business partner Ali is a trained chef, I have a marketing and business degree, and my husband is amazing with spreadsheets and numbers, and we all trust each other to do what we do best, and it's worked out really well so far.
  3. Get a mentor. There are people who love to help see small businesses grow, and they are such a good resource; use them!
