What's your business, and who are your customers?
We do French/English translation, editing, and content writing for a variety of clients in Atlantic Canada and beyond. We work with the federal and provincial governments, universities, communications companies, and various alliances and associations.
Tell us about yourself
I am an immigrant, recently made a Canadian citizen, and my wife and I started a business to create jobs for ourselves so we could combine our communication and language skills with our desire to help the community and spend as much time together as possible. Our clients are involved with causes that are important to us, so that's always very motivating. Also, we find such variety in our projects. We love an email with "I don't know if this is something you do, but..." It's always interesting.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Our biggest accomplishment is getting to the point where we can do this full-time without needing to work for anyone else. We get to choose who we want to work with; anything beyond that is just gravy.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest thing is dealing with uncertainty. Working for someone else gives you a regular paycheque and the illusion of security, so being a business owner has a lot to do with managing fear. It's not for everyone, but it's a hundred percent worth it.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Play to your strengths and do something you genuinely love to do, partner with someone you trust and who makes you better, and stay flexible. You'll find your niche if you look for where you can help.
