Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Angelo Falcone, Founder of Dignity Integrative Health and Wellness, located in Rockville, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Dignity Integrative is an integrative medical practice focused on maximizing health and longevity using a lifestyle-based approach based on the core pillars of nutrition, movement, sleep, and mental resiliency. The practice cares for patients from 15-80 years of age who are looking for a more holistic path to optimal health. Many of our patients have been frustrated by the traditional way of care, using multiple pharmaceutical medications or simply not getting to the root cause of the issues they are facing.

Tell us about yourself

After 25 years of practicing emergency medicine and running progressively larger organizations, including the largest partnership in the acute care space, I became interested in the true drivers of health and wellness. I went back 'to school' in my mid-50s to complete a 2-year fellowship in Integrative Health. Our current healthcare system is focused on disease management and not keeping people healthy and preventing or reversing chronic disease.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Making the decision to open a solo medical practice from scratch was both incredibly hard as well as rewarding. My reward has been being able to dramatically impact the patients who have trusted me with their care. From markedly improving patients suffering from depression to undiagnosed chronic gastrointestinal issues, it has been a privilege to take what I have learned and use a holistic approach to improve patients' lives.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

We are a small practice trying to change how patients receive care and taking the tools to personally change their lives. When you hear the term lifestyle modification, it does not reflect the incredible effort it takes to make those changes.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. First, find a need and what most interests you.
  2. Assemble a team that can help you execute your vision, whether as direct employees, contractors, or advisors.
  3. No matter how small your business, the greatest opportunity for growth comes from your customers as referrals, so go above and beyond to delight them.
