What's your business, and who are your customers?
Different Functional is invested in mental health awareness and promotion based on a lived-experiences peer model. Our primary service is the Different Functional podcast, where we discuss mental health issues and how they affect daily living. We also have a blog and offer digital products.
Tell us about yourself
We are two sisters who experienced a traumatic childhood and spent years working on our own mental health and personal growth. We are inspired to help others like us who are trying to recover from trauma, understand their neurodivergence, and use their innate skills to live healthier, more fulfilling lives on their terms. We are motivated daily by the personal connections we are developing with our listeners. We love hearing their personal stories of growth and how our content has had a positive impact on their lives.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Our biggest accomplishment has been successfully juggling our family ties and business partnership to consistently build and improve our business in the midst of busy lives, even with the geographic distance (780 miles) between us. We have become closer, grown as people, and are looking forward to developing meaningful, lasting connections with our listeners and readers.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Finding time to commit to business activities, being consistently creative, and coordinating multiple schedules.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be patient - Allow things to happen at an organic pace and trust that success will come.
- Be persistent - There will be a lot of obstacles, big and small, don't let them stop you.
- Be open to partnership - It helps to have someone who complements your skills. The weight is much easier to carry when distributed.
