Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with David Cox, Founder and Owner of Design DCA, located in Houston, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I founded Design DCA in Houston, TX, in 2006. With past home building experience as a project manager and leader of a design department, I ensure my designs are not only functional and cost-efficient for the home builder but also beautiful and modern for the homeowner. I use my talents and experience in the home building industry to create one-of-a-kind spec homes for home builders or unique luxury home experiences for homeowners. Whatever your preferred style of residential architecture – modern design, traditional home design, or somewhere in between with a transitional style – Design DCA can create your dream home.

Tell us about yourself

I grew up loving art, architecture, and design. My father was a drafter and occasionally worked in the field of architecture. I think that was his favorite, but in Central Missouri, where we lived at the time, it was hard to stay gainfully employed in that discipline. Because of that, he tended to do much more mechanical and engineering work. As soon as I learned about the mid-century modern Case Study homes, I was hooked. I could spend hours pouring over those images and plans and knew I wanted to be in the field of residential architecture.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

For one, our longevity. We have maintained a steady and successful practice since 2006. I think even more important are our repeat clients. We regularly have repeat builder clients, but we've been around long enough now that we are getting custom home clients coming back to us as well. Clients we designed personal homes for in our early years are having us design their move-up or down-size homes now.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

For me, time management and learning to delegate. I love what I do, so I primarily focus on the design side of things and have to force myself to make time for the business side.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Passion for what you do is key for me. I can't imagine going into a business I wasn't passionate about.
  2. Constantly learn in your field to stay on top of your game.
  3. Treat your clients right. Do what you say when you say you'll do it. Referrals and repeat business are priceless.
