Tell us about yourself
I am a second-generation clinical skincare professional with over 20 years of experience in cosmetics and product development, CEO, and Visionary of Dermovia. I came from extensive practice as a licensed medical esthetician. Born with a natural gift, I continue to innovate products and treatment regimens to heal and invigorate even the most severe of facial skin conditions, including disorders, burns, and cancer.
I grew up influenced by my medical herbalist father and beautician mother. Since childhood, I was drawn to helping others and inspired by my parents to lean into my medical roots and forge my own path through the Dermovia brand. I financially boot-strapped the start-up with some seed money loans from friends and family to pursue my dream of sharing my knowledge of skincare through the products that I've created. What drives me to do what I do every day is my sincere desire and belief that I can develop beneficial products to help make a real difference in people's lives and help boost their confidence, feel better, and enable them to put their best face forward at every stage in their lives for generations to come.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
In these accelerated times of skincare advancements, Dermovia brings consumers educated choices with research-backed results they can trust. Tapping into my passion and experience as a medical esthetician, Dermovia has established an effective niche for itself in the otherwise crowded beauty market. Many skincare brand owners do not come with an educational background in the field. I was able to apply my knowledge of ingredients to work directly with skincare labs and scientists to develop each specific product that delivers the kind of results with performance that meets my high expectations.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is treating people who work with you with respect and appreciation. You are often under a great deal of stress, but never should you take it out on those around you. People who stand behind you and your vision should be appreciated and valued. The entrepreneurial journey can feel very lonely and push you to your limits, but it's teamwork that gets you to the top, and the satisfaction of getting there with others is so much sweeter and more rewarding than going at it alone. Sometimes as a business owner, you forget about the relationships because you're so focused on the work and hitting your targets. What's essential is the morale of your team, and people who work hard for you need to feel that they matter in the process.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
First tip is to remember what your big picture vision is at all times and what drives you to want to get to that goal so badly. Things will happen along the way to throw you off course or discourage you or challenge you to question yourself. If you constantly remind yourself of what you're trying to accomplish and why you want it so badly, that focus and reason will help you stay strong in your journey.
Second tip is to be a creative problem solver and be super resourceful- pull all of your contacts and have conversations with everyone along the way, from employees to strangers on the plane. You not only learn so much from every situation, you discover answers when you least expect it, and usually, opportunities and resources are easily missed if you don't open up conversation and put yourself out there to access information.
Last tip is to appreciate being the student and not think that you have all the answers. You grow a business by constantly being open to learning from everyone you encounter and surround yourself by. Be humble, not stubborn, and stay positive as a leader to motivate and inspire your team to believe in you and get behind your vision. Work smarter, not harder, by trusting your team and letting others help you reach your goals.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
At-Home Experience: Dermovia was created to seamlessly complement your lifestyle and beauty routines in a way that has never been done before. Understanding the importance of empowering consumers, Dermovia makes it possible for anyone and everyone to address diverse skin conditions and ailments with at-home solutions to attain optimal skin health.
On-The-Go, In-Motion Wearability: Dermovia's patented ear loop system makes it easy for consumers to enjoy treating their skin without getting in the way of other tasks at hand. Traditional face masks can often be a messy and time-consuming endeavor-- from properly affixing the mask to meet the dimensions of your face to ensure the mask stays put and restricting activities-- it's no wonder so many people struggle to make time for masking in their skincare routines. Dermovia has created a solution for all of this. The brand's masks have unique straps that pull up and over the ears. Hence, the product stays in place, giving the wearer the freedom to engage in other activities-- finishing that assignment for work, jumping on a conference call, getting ready for a night out, cooking, cleaning, and everything in between.
