Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Denisha Hamilton, Owner of Journey to Wellness, located in Gainesville, VA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the owner of Journey to Wellness, a mental health group practice located in Northern Virginia. We provide mental health and personal fitness services to clients of all ages, dealing with any life circumstance, across the state of Virginia and Maryland. We offer personal as well as virtual services.

Tell us about yourself

I have known since I was in 8th grade that I wanted to be a mental health therapist. After many years of working for a County agency and then transitioning to working for a group practice, I made the decision to start my own private practice. I started as a solo practice and quickly realized that more calls were coming in than I could handle.

During the pandemic, I was stretched very thin and decided to start growing my practice to include training new therapists in the field. I am motivated every day by my clients and their perseverance. I absolutely love my job! I appreciate every person I encounter who is struggling with difficult circumstances and allows me to be a part of their journey.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishments are the awards that I've won. To know that I'm having such an impact on my community and to be recognized for my work is such an honor. I am so honored when a client emails me to tell me how our sessions improved their life. The feeling is immeasurable.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The responsibility I feel to the people who work for me, as well as to my clients who receive services from us. I never want to disappoint anyone or fall short of what I said I would deliver. So I'm always looking for ways to stay relevant, to make sure that everyone is getting the cases they want and that my clients are receiving good services.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be patient and set realistic expectations for what growth for your business will look like.
  2. Develop a flexible business plan that accommodates your growth as a business owner and the changing needs of your potential clients.
  3. Build a team of supporters who can guide you toward the direction you are going in.
