Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Deneen L. Garrett, Founder, and CEO of Deneen Consults, located in Detroit, MI, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I’m the Founder & CEO of Deneen Consults. Deneen Consults is a coaching, podcasting, and speaking business that empowers Women of Color (WOC) to Live a Dream Lifestyle.
Tell us about yourself
As I was preparing to retire from a 20+ year corporate career in Diversity & Inclusion, Program/Project Management, and Talent Development last year, my friends told me I had too much to offer not to do something. That something became Deneen Consults. I’ve always coached people. It comes naturally, so that made sense. I’d launched the An Intimate Conversation with Women of Color podcast in 2020, so building this along with my speaking was in alignment.
Empowering and elevating WOC is my daily motivator. Leaving a legacy where WOC did X because of me is my aspiration. Also, building Generational Wealth keeps me going as well, as I have a 21-year-old son who is my legacy.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a new business owner is my impact on my clients and audience. I’m also proud to know I have people who believe in and invest in me. Having a cheering squad is a sign of living well.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
For me, it’s been niching down, determining what I’m actually going to offer. Initially, I planned to consult businesses on creating development programs for WOC then I added coaching. Speaking and podcasting were a given. As I’m working with a podcasting coach, I’ve decided to focus on podcasting/speaking and will leverage both for my coaching practice. It’s less of a hard thing and more of growth, going through the process.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
As a Dream Lifestyle Coach, I’d say to use my 3 D’s dream about what you want your business to be, decide your offerings, then drive to make it happen. Part of driving could mean seeking a coach who aligns with the direction you’re going in.
