Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in interior design but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Yana Shtainberg, co-founder of Decor2Go, located in Winnipeg, MB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are an interior décor company specializing in wallpaper and custom murals. We are based out of Winnipeg. Plain walls can be so boring, right? My business partner, Toni, and I started with the small idea of making walls as interesting as possible. With this idea in mind, we started Decor2Go.

A company focused on helping you visualize your dream wall and making it come true. We have over 10,000+ pre-made wallpaper designs, and added to it, we can also customize your wall to make it exactly the way you want, be it an anime feature wall, European style-inspired design, or something urban and chic. We are a small business, but we want to help our customers dream big when it comes to interior décor and make those dreams come true.

Tell us about yourself

Toni and I both come from a design background, having worked individually on various projects related to interior décor. We crossed paths in 2015 and realized we worked well together. We picked up projects for restaurants and other businesses and successfully executed projects receiving commendations for our work.

This inspired us to diversify our business to what it is today. Our journey came with its own challenges, but we kept motivating each other and focusing on our growth. Support from our families and staff made us who we are today. I believe we will always move forward as long as we stay focused on our long-term goals.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We believe a company's success depends on the team you build, and we have had the privilege of working with some of the smartest minds in Winnipeg. We work great as a unit, and this mentality reflects in the quality of service we offer and our happy customers who attest to the value that we provide.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

We believe finding balance is the hardest thing to do. Besides being the owner of a business, like my partner, I am also a wife and a mother, which comes with its own set of responsibilities. There have been times when we've found it difficult to distribute our time and adhere to our family's needs at home and the workplace. But with the support of your family, everything is possible.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Define your goals, and have a clear vision of what you want your business to be or do five years from now.
  2. Build a strong support system of people who will always have your back. That's half the job done.
  3. Network, network, network! The next person you talk to could be your next biggest customer. Do not hesitate to put yourself out there and let people know that you have something to offer.
